How to choose the right chew for your dog

Every treat in the shop has a chew strength, from gentle to extra tough. It is our quick guide to how hard a treat is and how long it lasts, so you can match it to your dog.

Match the chew to the chewer

  • Gentle: soft treats like meaty strips, sausages and jerky. Great for training, puppies and older dogs.
  • Medium: ears, trachea and snouts. A satisfying chew that does not take all afternoon.
  • Tough: tendons, camel skin and moon bones, for dogs who like to work at a treat.
  • Extra tough: hooves, horns, roots and yak bars. Our longest-lasting chews, for keen chewers.

Pick a sensible size

Choose a chew that is too big to swallow whole. Bigger dogs need bigger chews, and when a chew has been worn down small, swap it for a new one.

Always supervise

Stay with your dog while they chew, and make sure there is fresh water nearby. If your dog is new to a treat, start with a small amount.
